I'm specifically talking about on land. I'm pretty sure they can back-peddle in water, though I haven't really seen that either. They usually just go around corners.


Also, if a turtle is flipped over, can it flip back over?

simply, yes they can walk backwards and a turtle on it's back cannot flip itself back over to it's feet. As for them dying a result of being on their back - as far as I know that's only because it leaves them vulnerable to prey and if in the sun they have no protection on their underside and will cook if exposed long enough.

yeah they can, but not fast and it's mainly to turn around. like they'll take two steps back and turn around. also, i'm pretty sure they can die if they are flipped on their back, so i never tried it with my turtle
