If you're asking how long it takes to get a title insurance commitment in place, it really depends on the title company you are using.
I've gotten some commitments back within hours of request, on a simple refinance.
On a purchase, however, they usually need to see the actual abstract. Tracking that down, getting it out of archives, and shipping it to your title company can often take a few days. On a purchase, I don't bother calling to check on my commitment unless 5 business days have passed since my request. On a refinance, I wait 48 hours.
The the insurance is in force the minute you sign the mortgage documents.

although the paperwork may not be complete, your title insurance is effective the date the mortgage was recorded.

well if you have just purchased your home you should have gotten title insurance when you closed... if you are about to close it will be done by the attorney at closing.... ?
