A right is explicitly guaranteed in a document or statute. A liberty is anything you are free to do that is not contrary to the law.

You have the right to be an outspoken atheist
because of Amendment I.
You have the right to own a firearm because of Amendment II.
You have the right to not be owned by another citizen because of Amendment XIII.

Pardon me.....the 13th Amendment is not part of the bill of rights.....Third example: You have the right to not self-incriminate, based on the 5th Amendment.

2nd Edit: The folks below me have given excellent responses. I think you have your answer.

I agree with Socraticus, except would say that being an outspoken atheist would be a liberty, not a right. Another right would be the right for women to vote (Amendment 19).

I guess rights come more from first basic law needs, moral problems that must be established by law - certain needs always and everywhere by everyone, when liberties are second value established by law, additional needs developing freedom and general happiness and support of society.

Sorry, but if its your homework I think you should take clues and finish it by yourself. Train your mind a bit harder :) Czasem jestem wredny ;)

Civil liberties: limits upon government power to balance freedom and order
Civil rights: obligations imposed on upon government to promote equality

Then this site goes on to give you examples of how they are in the amendments..I think this is EXACTLY what your looking for ..Hope it helps you..s
