Im having problems with items I have downloaded, mainly clothing I have downloaded the meshes with them and have installed them as they came as package files, in the game the items are showing as leggings & a red shirt...anyone know the reason for this and how I can get them to work??

Sorry..they are sims2pack files & not package files.

Ive had the exact same problem I always get the red top and leggings YUK! I think this is as we haven't downloaded the right mesh though we think we have It can be very confusing!
Are you downloading from modthesims2? as I ALWAYS have this problem from there.
Have you been on www.thesims2.ea.com? The official Sims 2 website? I go on exchange on there and then click on Sims, I then type MESH into the search bar (On the Sims keyword part) Then I look at the Sims check the descriptions see the ones that say NO MESH NEEDED Or some say MESH FREE then i know that those Sims always work. I never use modthesims 2 anymore it is great but don't agree with me!

It depends on where you are downloading them from. The official things off the Sims websites should not be giving you any problems, but the one's from other fan sites might have complex install instructions. The first thing you should do is check the readme in the zip file if there is any, and follow the instructions in there. If there isn't check the site it came from and see if they have special instructions.

the excuses that it could be crashing are that: a million. The products/plenty you downloaded are unlike minded consisting of your pastime and ought to require boom/stuff packs that you do not have. 2. The document that you downloaded are corrupt. that could not be your fault. that is probable the guy who uploaded the downloads fault. in case you are able to try going again to the products that you downloaded and be conscious if there are any boom/stuff packs that it required that you do not have. that should be the most probable difficulty. good success
