My HP laptop was off, closed, and sitting on the table. It was not plugged into the power. All of a sudden a loud beeping noise came from the speakers. The screen is black and the lights are on, but the computer wont turn off. What is wrong?

It has been beeping for 45 minutes now. I don't think it was the battery. I turned the computer off last night and havn't used it since.

Take the battery out (not plugged into the power either, of course), wait a while (five minutes or so), and put the battery back in... see if it works normally after that.

If it is still acting weird (and if you are sure it is not the battery-low behaviour), there should be an 800 support number somewhere on the stuff that came with the laptop, if you can find it (or go to their website, http://www.hp.com/ and find the tech support number there). Call that and see if they have suggestions. You might have to mail it in for service... if so, it would be best if it is still under warranty.

Is the battery dead? or it could be a problem with the memmory. Try holding the power button in for up to 10 seconds to force it to turn off, plug it in leave it for 5 mins (to allow the battery to gain some charge) and then try turning it on again.

in some units a built-in sleep program is optimized for the harddrive so that during times of non-usage the harddrive can slow down to gain a longer lifetime it sounds to me like the system was begging for power because the battery was nearly dead maybe next time when the beeping starts plug it in and move the mouse around this will re-exite the harddrive and allow the system to charge normally

sounds like a hardware error, like something overheated. Let it die from battery power if it wont shut off. Though it should shut off if you hold in the power button.

The next step would be to Contact HP's troubleshooting on there website.

Try taking the battery out. Sounds like it may be low. If it stops, Plug it in to the outlet & replace the battery.

actual sounds like a ineffective battery - even with the indisputable fact that batteries do no longer normally die in one year (except they are overheated). loss of life batteries constantly act in this type - asserting they have a hundred% cost and then understanding in a minute or so, replace the battery. that ought to repair it precise up. it isn't the flexibility p.c.. because of the fact your pc works positive on power. that's the charging mechanism yet it relatively is a approaches much less probable because of the fact the battery is surely charging, that's purely no longer lasting long.

Most likely a hardware error. If still within warranty, call HP to fix a service.

maybe it's counting down to explode. :)

I agree with the battery though. If you didn't power it off completely, it would still use minor amounts of power in sleep mode. Try plugging it in.
