Poros my friend, Have been going there now for half of my life, travelled a lot in the world and I also used to be a qualified travel agent and know that the 'typical brits' and most other loutish tourists dont go there any more because package holidays from here had stopped because of the long tranfer (1 hour by hydrofoil or 2hrs 30mins by ferry plus 1 hour from the airport or you can drive now quite quickly in about 2.5hrs due to a new road from Athens.
Tends to be mainly people from Athens and other areas of greece who have prperty there and from abroad is mainly scandanavian and british families and independant travellers.

The person above gives good reason for Poros but in addittion that, Poros is linked to many different Islands by boat including the nearby Hydra which has no cars and very exclusive-Joan Collins has a vila there including many other stars. In addittion there is Aegina, Spetse, Porto Hydra and others as well as the mainland only a couple of hundred metres away which gives links onto Naphlio (nice place but not much to see around and not half as beautifull as Poros) and Epidavros the ancient ampetheatre. Also ther is a few nice secluded beaches to be found on the island and not so far on the mainland (from Galatas) as well as a massive lemon grove too!

Ideal time for you to goto Greece would be May or October when the weather is nice but not too hot and the tourist season is just starting or finishing.

An interesting time to go for a local festivity is Easter which this year in greece falls in the middle of April.

Forget July/August as tourists are in every nook and cranny all over greece!!

You can do your own thing in Poros and stay in the quieter part of Neorio.

For more advise from others have a look at this forum :-

If you have lots of money also look at Hydra but it is very expensive.

You can also consider Kefalonia up in the montains, very nice but in my opinion nothing beats Poros overall in the whole world.

Enough said!!!!

If you just want a nice quite place to go with a few nice places to eat.....Nafplio on the Sea....its easy to walk all over it. The fortress is high up on a mountain (hill to them probably) but I like it for weekends sometimes just to get away from Athens.
Or you can take a ferry to Poros...3 hrs by ferry, and a nice ride..nice little shops and also easy to walk around, some night life, but not your hectic pace as some touristy islands are

Costa Rica. They do Eco-tourism so it's not filled with crazy tourist's & that kind of stuff. I went there on my honeymoon & it was just what we needed to relax after all of the wedding stress. Off of the beaten path there is a hotel called Hotel Las Tortugas that was designed for scientists to study the sea turtles that nest on the shore there - fanfreakintastic!

The following places are kind of secluded.

Puerto Escondido, http://www.tomzap.com/escondio.html...

Close to Manzanillo, Los Angeles Locos de Tenacatita. http://www.cancunsteve.com/vallarta/losa...

Majahuitas its one of my favorites. No child can afford this one. http://www.mexicanbeachresort.com/eng/si...

I hope this helps. I truly enjoy all this as much as I enjoy the natural wilderness of Alaska.

Try Naxos: http://www.kamarivillage-naxos.com/ These are private houses, not "hotel villas" so you'd have more privacy like this...
