The salaries and profits are through the roof. Entertainers are worshipped and treated like gods. Is it eating up too much of our incomes? Is it all really worth it? Are we getting our money's worth? I'm talking singers, professional athletes, actors, etc. It's nice as a minor diversion but does it have to be so all consuming as we are being driven to believe? How many awards shows do they need to tell us how great they are? Now they are telling us what is wrong with the world and that we should all spend our money (not theirs) to fix it. I'm not against this stuff but is it all become too all consuming in our lives?

Supply and Demand is a good thought but doesn't it lead to the chicken or the egg question - which came first? Supply meet demand or Demand meet supply? If the only choice was hamburger will most people choose hamburger. Some good thoughtful answers so far.

I loved Mizhani's comment about athlete's picketing for more money - I remembered one NFL walkout and seeing at their training camp guys covered in gold jewelry leaning against Porches and Ferraris demanding more money. I haven't been to an NFL game since.

Love this question!! Yes of course the entertainment industry is out of control. While the median income for teachers are about 30,000 dollars a year, the average entertainer makes well over six figures. Where are our values? Are they missing?

Dollar value for concerts.... can I get a dance.. and more than 10 songs.. if I see you in concert...?? Encores.. can they be manditory. R.Kelly.. can he show up to a concert ... NOT DRUNK? At the movies? can I get a couch and some real food when I go to the movie theater... Can I not spend 20 min in a movie full of previews for the next TV. sitcom to come out the following season??

And, don't get me started on athletes .. the audacity for them to picket because they aren't making enough money? Seriously... what is the world coming to?

The source of this problem is the same as the source of other problems like the fast food industry, and Wall Mart.

It's the demand. If we the consumers continue like lemmings, to throw our money towards the low quality things in life (Big Momma's House, Brittney Spears, Double Quarter Pounder w/cheese, etc., we cannot blame those who supply those low quality items. It's easy to point the finger at the industries and such for supplying such garbage, but sadly, as a society at large, that is what we want.

If everyone refused to go to Burger King and buy their products unless they served 100% organic, healthy meals, then that's exactly what they would serve. The reality however is everyone chases that which is the fastest and cheapest. The same thing holds true for the entertainment industry.

Can you say iTunes? Not much available there in the way of quality material. Look at what's played on the radio. Same stuff. It's not all bad, but in no way is any of it great.

Supply and demand is the bottom line here.

I think that if you think that the entertainment industry is out of control, then don't support it. Don't go to movies, buy cds, watch awards shows. If there is no demand for it, things will either change or dry up. The bad thing is that there are so many average people who think their lives are so boring that they have to be "into" celebrities. But I think that the "age of celebrity" will soon be over (not the entertainment industry itself) for the reasons you state.
