punks = people against the government, usually associated with anarchists (who opposed all govt) and socialist/commies (who want a "classless" society)
they were all opposed to capitalism..
which is where the fashion came from. since they didnt support capitalism, they wouldnt buy new clothes, theyd make them theirselves, and if theyd fall apart, they used safety pins to keep them together.

emo = brief history.. emo music split from hardcore punk, it was less violent, more structured, and they wrote more about life, rather than politics. eventually, emo evolved into "indie emo" and thats where the label really came about. indie kids were the first emo kids i can remember. but emo keeps changing.. it was used to descrive kids in the hardcore scene, and now its being used to describe goths..
emo = changing too much

goth = usually associated with people who listen to metal, no offence to anyone, but theyre seen as outcasts, depressed, quiet, and yet angry at the world. goths usually wear dark clothes, baggy pants, sometimes chains hanging from them. theyre fashion sense is usually seen as "strange/different/odd" by people into pop(ular) culture

This is sort of tricky. I guess the best place to begin is at the beginning. In the late 1970s, greasy and diasffected youth in New York and London began picking up guitars and making really angry noises with them. Their music was generally unmusical and their fashion was unfasionable. These young people were called "punks", because young thugs and hooligans had been called punks for ages. Only these people embraced the previously scolding term. They were open to being viewed as punks. Their music was simple, rough, and captured the moment. Their clothes were pieced together from thrift stores, dumpsters, or whatever they could find. Soon, this musical sound would spawn something else- something darker and more sinister sounding. This was goth music, which emerged shortly after punk. Whereas fasionable punks favored plaids and suspenders, goths prefered anything black, lacy and Victorian in feel. These two movements were outlets for young people throughout the '80s and '90s, but Emo is a newer development. Emo is named for it's "emotion." The music is like goth, in it's dark imagery, but generally catchier (you can sing along and get it stuck in your head). Emo owes as much of a debt to mainstream music from the '90s as it does to goth. If you happen to be at the mall, trying to decide what sub-culture a particular Hot Topic shopper fits into, here's a basic guide:
Dark blue jeans:
Probably Emo, maybe Goth or Punk
Dark Blue jeans rolled up at the cuff:
Deffinitely Emo
Red Plaid:
Probably Punk, but maybe Goth or Emo
Black rose in hair:
Goth
Black lace:
Goth
Really tight black shirt:
Probably Emo (but maybe Goth or Punk)
Anthing Abercrombie:
None of the above
Torn jeans:
Punk
Trucker hat:
Emo
Black Velvet:
Goth
Big black boots:
Goth and Punk
Converse all stars:
Punk and Emo

But here's the really tricky thing: Nowadays the generes can overlap. Like how I've been Goth for over 10 years, but my best friend is Emo. She looks a lot like me, but we identify ourselves differently. She likes "Saves the Day" and I like "Sisters of Mercy." At the end of the day, it's all about the music and not so much about the fasion. People can be goth, emo or punk and look just like everyone else. What matters is what music they listen to. It's a subtle and tricky thing. Sorry I can't be of more help, but you'll figure it out. More than anything else, it takes time to tell the difference between the three lifestyles.

hi band freak. i'm questioning the way you probably did on that technology attempt. i think of I have been given a C+. great huh! to place the respond accessible. In our college emo is like donning chains and sortta continually unhappy. Punk is donning black lots of the time yet in addition placed on different colorations (particularly pink and gray and brown). Goth is often wears black and is multiple with dying, and oftentimes are the main familiar human beings in school. Too undesirable for the different human beings. Goth's rock!!
