I think it's zombies. Animals instinctively avoid zombies. They have almost a "sixth sense" as to the approach of Solanum. (Solanum is the virus that creates zombies) This warning signal, be it or an odor, some kind of vibe, long forgotten by humans, it is impossible to mask by any known substance.
But if zombies don't show up, you may wanna put your dog through a drug test.
