When you delete text messages from your mobile phone where do they go?

I just want to know cos when i connected my phone to the computer i was able to retrieve every single message i had sent/received

Deleting Text messages on your phone is exactly the same as deleting files on a computer. All that you are doing is deleting the file system handle into the message/file so that it is no longer listed or maintained by the operating software. Hence the actual content of the message is still there in the memory and with special software, you can retrieve the data and see it again! This is quite important if you are recycling your phone because some crook in 3rd world will have access to all of your contacts and text messages!! ;/
