About twice a week I receive someone else's mail in my mailbox. Important mail - like statements and bills. I always put it back in my mailbox to be sent to the correct address. But what has me concerned is if I'm getting someone else's mail, most likely someone else is getting mine. And what happens to my mail then? Are they opening it, throwing it away or returning it? Who knows?
This has just recently started. I mean, I used to get others mail every now and then but now it's on a regular basis. Oh, and it used to be my neighbor's mail but now I'm getting mail from people who live blocks away.
My question is - Is this something that just happens to everyone on a regular basis or is this the delivery person being careless? Should I contact my local usps office or is there nothing that can be done? Like I said, my main concern is my mail in other people's hands. If I have their mail they probably have mine. Any advice?

Contact your local post office and ask to speak to a route supervisor. This should not be happening and can be corrected if reported. If you say nothing there is a good chance it will continue. They will be happy to correct the problem.

Yes everyone gets someone elses mail once in a while but that is just rediculious. i would contact your post office . Go down in person you won't get anywhere over the phone . Find out who routes your mail and tell them your not recieving your mail and your are recieinvg others on a regualr baisis. Tell them if you get your idenity stolen you will sue them for neglect . Of this keeps happening i would go open a PO box at a diffrent postal office and have all your mail forward there . You best bet and safest one is maybe go to your local UPS store and open a box there . Everything will be sent there and it will still show as a street address it will just be the UPS address and not your own . More priavte and i think it is cheaper too but you would want to check .

NEVER trust the USPS.. I am still waiting on a priority mail package from last Aug. I was having problems getting my bills on time so I had to get a PO box.. now I get MOST of it on time. I got a thing on Dec. 29 for an invitaion to something Dec. 17... Hope they were not expecting me. I have tried to talk to the workers at the PO and I might as well be talking to the wall.. it does no good.. I would talk to a supervisor and take all the mail u have gotten that is not yours with u.. if not they will not believe there is a problem.. (mail men don't make mistakes).

Most mail these days is sorted by machine. It comes to your carrier ready for delivery. An experienced carrier catches"mis-directed mail".An inexperienced or incompetent one will not. It's important to use the 9-digit zip-code.This creates the bar-code on the letter. When you get someone Else's mail cross off the zip-code and the bar-code.Otherwise you'll get it back the next day.Don't worry about your mail.Make the zip-code clear and bold, they should be the largest numbers on the letter. It will 99% of the time be delivered correctly.

Yes, you need to go down to your local post office and have a chat with the Postmaster. If it keeps happening on a regular basis, there is a problem with the carrier.

It happens to all of us. It's usually when there's a substitute carrier on the route. And you can always tell when that happens. My mail normally arrives around 3 pm. When there's a sub, its been as late as 9 pm - and half of it isn't even mine!! You have to remember what the qualifications are for working at the Post Office - you have to be breathing. It makes no difference if you can read or write.

Complain to the postmaster. One of the reasons that this happens,is that the mail is sorted by machines, the zip+4 sorts it right to your route or neighborhood.Occassionally, letters are mis-sorted and may go to the wrong bundle of mail. The carrier only goes by the top adress on the bundle,if there are someones else's letters underneath, you get them as well. It's all part of the machine-sorting "improvement".I'm retired from the postal service,it gets more screwed up every day...I get my neighbor's mail as well.

Yes you need to report it to the post office. That's a serious problem.

A lot of times they are buddies and don't do anything. If you don't get prompt results I would get a hold of the inspector general and file a complaint.
