Brazil like all places has its good and bad points.

I traveled to the city of Curitiba. The capital city of the state Parana. This is a big city. Very clean, good public transportation, upwardly mobile.

After a few days there I formed the opinon that this city puts San Francisco, California to shame. While there is no water front there is a lot to see and do here. Very cosmopolitan city with a lot of culture. If I had the money I would live there.

As is with most countries there are good places and bad places. This is one of the good places.

I am ashamed to admit, but I speak very little Portuguese. Eu falo um poco de portugues. Bao tarde.

I loved it when I visited Sao Paolo and Rio for Carnaval 2004. The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful and the prices were reasonable...I'll be going back! As for the language, I speak English, German and Spanish and communication was not a problem. The level of education on average in the commercial areas(where you should be going!) is very high, just as any cosmopolitan city. Stay out of the favelas unless you are well versed in combat and speak fluent Portuguese.
