I suppose i may be doing it myself with this question but it has become quickly apparent to me how the 'best answers' are usually the ones that back up the ideas already presented in the question. Do people use this service with the intention of finding new information they might not have thought about - ie. are they keeping an open mind and remaining objective?

People ask questions on Yahoo Answers to test their approach to a topic, and see how it stands up in the eyes of the society.

Usually they ask controversial topics, since they don't need reassurance in their stance on non controversial topics. It's rare to see someone seriously asking a question like "Are child molesters a benefit for the society?" since the answer to that is obvious.

They chose the answer which supports their approach because they are fighting to make their view to be the standard.

I find this very normal, and the same as what happens in the "real world," with the exception that here, because of anonymity, more people have the guts to voice their opinion, including myself.

I've seen a lot of both, but I would have to say most people have some sort of preconceived idea or answer before they even ask the question. I think it really depends on the subject matter, but I have asked technical questions to which I truly did not know the answer, and I have asked philosophical questions to which I wanted to see if many people shared in my sentiment. I think that's the great thing about Yahoo! Answers. A great mix of both keeps the world spinning and learning!

You are correct. How many times have you given an elaborate answer and the best answer picked is a stupid one liner.

I get upset when I give an answer and the person adds additional information that completely changes the question. Then they pick a best answer based on the revised question.

Yes! I relate to what you're saying. People should have the intellectual honesty to pick the best answer even if they don't agree with it. I'm a Christian and I've actually picked a few atheists answers as best answers to some of my questions.

I agree with you that the best answers usually confirm the asker's views. However, many of us do enjoy the viariety of answers for the different viewpoints. I myself rate answers based on how honest with themselves the answerer was and how well they answered the question, not how much I agree with their answer.

Good question. It is some of both. If you check out the different categories you should find what you need to know. Good luck.
