I damaged my right index finger when I was 9 years old and now I am 36. The nail has never grown right. A doctor told me years ago about a pill but she said it could make the nail grow upright. Any advice would be appreciated!!

I have had a lot of problems like that where an injury caused the nail to grow with a groove in it from the root to the tip. That lasted for years and I got used to it. I had asked my doctor and was told about the same thing as oohhbother said. The weird thing is as I looked at my nails prior to typing in that "it will never go away" - I realized that it had gone away. It might depend on how severe the damage was. I have had a thumbnail avulsed which is as bad as nails get but looking at both thumbs now I can't even tell which it was. So right now my fingernails all look normal so maybe there is hope in the long run.

I researched this question for you because I just injured my ring finger and my nail is misshapen even after the injured part is grown out.
The consensus of the articles I found was that if the nail-bed is scarred, nail deformity results, and after so many years, improvement is not likely possible.

What you are asking is : is there any way for a scar to go away.
