A virtual host allows you to serve several Web sites from one Web server.

Basically, a virtual host treats a given directory on the server as though it were the entire server for the purposes of processing server-side scripts (PHP, ASP, JSP, etc.); serving pages and logging requests, etc.

Instead of a full host, i.e. one computer dedicated to your website, the web hosting company uses virtual host so one computer can act as many websites.

It used to be that 1 IP number = 1 domain name = 1 machine / server

However, with virtual host, X IP numbers = Y domain names = 1 (or more) machine(s).

You just log into your own web space, and your space will act independently from all the other web spaces. It's virtual (i.e. you're not getting your dedicated host), thus "virtual host".
