what is wrong with pension plans today?

For the most part, they don't exist in the US unless you are a government employee. Pension plans have bee replaced by the 401k. Personally, I think it stinks and would much prefer a pension plan to trusting my money to the limited choices a 401k has to offer. Just my two cents. :-)
