For example, there are .com .net .org .gov etc etc etc

If I wish to purchase my own unique one, can that be done? If so how?

You mean like you want to create your own extension like .me? You can very well create one yourself.

However, you'll have to talk to the powers-that-be in order for them to possibly allow your extension to be "broadcast" to the entire internet. As one person said, that's ICANN (www.icann.org).

Unfortunately it's a time and cost prohibitive venture, I'll tell you that. And you've NO guarantees you'll get what you want.

I'm pretty sure http://www.icann.org/ is the main company that would deal with this. Or it may be: http://www.iana.org/

Good Luck
