What would you do if your superior told you to get your nails professionally done, dress more professionally, get your hair done and wear more makeup?

Before you answer, consider that you're already dressing professionally, wearing black slacks or a skirt, blouse and jacket, your hair is done every day and you already wear makeup.

As a store manager in a womens retail clothing store i would have to say it depends on the job that your in. The more makeup and nails might be a good thing if you are in an upscale enviroment and the pay is really good. The thing with professional nails and hair do's not to mention a better wardrobe and cosmetics is that it costs money and if it not built into your budget you wont be able to afford it. My suggestion would be to consult with a hiring company or someone that does employee searches or something about your dress in your field of employment and maybe if the makeup is a huge deal try a decent size department store that might have a suggestion on something simply and a little different to do. As for colour of your dress black is always a classic and can be worn anywhere at anytime try just adding a light coloured blouse or something under it. But really your boss shouldnt be dictating that kind of thing unless its built into company dress code policy

You may be smartly dressed but not dressed in the Company's style. They may not have a stated uniform nor style but look around and see what everyone else is wearing, especially those people higher up the ladder than you. Apparently you're supposed to dress like the people higher up who's job you want.
You may want to consider if your superior is wanting to help you get promoted you or to get rid of you.
Do you fit in with the rest of the Company's culture and is everything else ok with the Company and your job? If Yes then try to conform, if No then start looking for a Company you would feel more comfortable working for.

OK, wear do you work?

If you work somewhere where superficial appearance is very important (fashion industry, or on television, for example), then it might make sense. Check and see if there is a dress code at your place of employment, and try to follow it.

If the needs of that particular industry don't suit you, you might want to seek other employment.

Wow, I wouldn't take it well. Although I do many of those things, I'm totally anti fake nails. And I don't wear polish, I buff my nails and keep them groomed though.

What field do you work in? If you worked in the beauty or fashion industry, I could understand.

But, me, I would probably quit and look for a job that liked me for me.

I would ask what more she would like you to do. Perhaps the slacks are not professional enough. She is your boss, so ask how you could improve up to what she is requesting of you.

Maybe she is trying to give you polite hints. Pull her aside and ask her what the problem is, and ask her to be specific.
