Mainly the baby is at risk of being overweight, or maybe he has already grown too large but yes there can be complications, mainly for the mom. That is why they don't like to take chances.

mothers with gestational diabetes tend to have larger babies, which could be one reason the doctors want to deliver early, especially if your aunt does not want to have a C Section. Also, if your aunt is insulin dependent right now, insulin ages the placenta, so babies tend to be born earlier. A friend of mine had a baby a month premature because of that very reason. The baby still weighed 5 lbs, 5 oz and didn't have any problems because mom was kept on bedrest for 3 days after her water broke to allow his lungs to mature in time for delivery. At 2 months old, he's perfect and just over 11 pounds.

when a pregnant woman has gestational diabetes the major concern is sugar intake which in turn makes the babys size a concern.
the doctor may be concerned that the baby will be too big for the woman to deliver vaginally at full term. there may be other complications besides the gestational diabetes that you don't know about.
I would say though that if your aunt is still active and looks and seems to feel ok that the baby and your aunt are probably fine.

I developed gestational diabetes while I was pregnant with my last daughter. I was induced to deliver about 10 days early because my plecenta wasn't working anymore and the baby had stopped growing. They told me that it was related to the diabetes and that the delivery was necassary to ensure the baby would be ok.
If there was something wrong with the baby they would tell your aunt. Things like growth, lung development and things like that. A lot can be seen on an ultrasound these days and doctors are very careful with diabetes. Odds are they are just being cautious.

Two weeks early isn't bad, as long as you're certain of the due date. At the most he might need a jump start to breathing, might have respiratory problems because those last few weeks are spent creating a surfactant that helps the lungs spread out after birth.
If she has diabetes, then the baby might also have complications from that...possibly blood sugar regulation problems and shaking, large weight (which isn't a real problem...esp if they're planning a csection)
The reason they would want to take the baby early is because the diabetes is probably pregnancy induced, and delivery would fix that. The longer you suffer from diabetes, the more problems to your body.
Best of luck to your aunt, and congrats on your new cuz!

Gestation diabetes pregnant women usually have large babies, and if the mom's sugar is not being controlled well, it's best to deliver the baby, so that the gestational diabetes will go away and not risk the mom or babies health.

Nope. If the gestational diabetes is bad enough they often will schedule a c-section a week or so before the due date for the benefit of the baby and mother.

It is entirely possible that the child has grown to be quite large. My daughter went diabetic while pregnant, and the baby was over 11 pounds. Had to have a C section.

the baby should be fine they are going to deliver early because babies with mothers who have gestational diabetes are at risk of getting too large. It will be healthier for mother and baby to deliver early. The baby should be fine health wise, everything should be developed to funtion properly. Best of luck!

For my brother, he had high blood sugar levels before he was born and the doctors suggested there was something really wrong with him and more tests, possibly delivery very early. My parents did not listen and he was born fine, well- he's still my brother, so he's really a loser and a bonehead, but he's very healthy. doctors might not always know the best thing to do. Myself too, my last baby they told me the water level inside of me was too much and my baby would have problems and they wanted to do tests and tests, but I had a healthy 8 1/2 pound baby boy a week later at full term.
