I'm not sure how to spell it, but I was watching a Simpsons episode last night and bart asked if Homer's country cousins are "Roobs". They said it about 5 times that episode (one where Homer owes money to the mafia and allows Fat Tony to film an adult film at their house). Its bugging me, i wanna know what a roob is!

A "rube" is supposed to be a simple minded country person or a "country bumpkin". Someone who you should be able to pull the wool over his eyes or put one over on.

I think that the term is used in the carnival business more than elsewhere. The "carnies" talk between themselves about the "rubes" who are playing their games, meaning that they can put one over on them.

The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus says:
Rube is another word for the noun Rustic and the definition is:
An inhabitant of a rural or remote area who is usually characterized by an utter lack of sophistication and cultivation.

Other synonyms are:
bumpkin, hayseed, hick, hillbilly, and redneck.

You might remember Anthony Hopkins' character,
Hannibal Lector telling Jodie Fosters character, Clarisse Starling that she looked liked a rube in her cheap shoes in the movie, Silence of the Lambs. Hope this helps!

A bumpkin. A rube. About 2 or 3 other things I could try to think of as terms. Basically dimwitted is how most thing of them. Rube though I think is more an old carny term. It was someone who was easy to sucker/scam.
