My 6 month old son seems to cough for attention, it is very light and when my wife picks him up he seems to stop. Is this normal behavior for a baby?

Very much so...my 4 month old son does the same thing!! I actually think its hilarious because some of the coughs are so obviously fake. :)

Babies recoginizes that the coughing gets the parents attention and will often do so for that reason. I can't tell the difference between the "attention" coughing and the real thing because the attention seeking cough is usually something ridiculous like 6 or 7 coughs in a row. He smiles after I pick him up, so I know he's just fine. Any other "cold-like" symptoms would be a tip off for the latter.

My youngest has been doing that for about 6 months now, she is 17 months. It all started when my oldest was sick and coughing her head off, with her being sick she got more attention, so I guess my youngest realized that and coughs to get attention. You can tell a fake cough from a real one, so just pay attention. Little ones are smart and figure out how to get attention.

My 7 month old went through the coughing stage. I think once she realized she could make a new noise and knew it was coming from her, she kept imitating it. Now every week she seems to come up with a new one. She would laugh after she coughed. It is so cute.

Babies do a lot of things to get us to pick them up..lol My daughter used to be really good at the fake coughing and sneezes. He'll find something new and stop coughing. As long as you know that there isn't anything medically wrong with him..I would say enjoy it while it lasts...when they're older they do bigger things to get attention. :)

aah! the fun begins.just wait till he figures out how to take his diaper off that is saturated in poop.then they learn to climb out of the crib at night and discover the fridge.be patient because it still has not gotten better for me.my 2 kids are 4yrs and the other is 10months.they like to give mini heartattacks with climbing the movie shelf.coating the entire bathroom with bubblebath.oh and dont forget scissors.scissors can do amazing things like reverse mohawks and decorating new clothes.

id say yes. hes figured a way to get your attention other than crying. could just be exercising his voice. my son makes coughing noises sometimes. he seems to do it once and is amused with the way it sounds so he continues.

my son started the fake cough after the hubby and I were both sick. Its no more attention getting or button pusing than "gah" or "bah", he's experimenting with sounds he can make.
