FRANCE beat ITALY 4-3 on penalties after a scoreless draw in the quarter-finals & CROATIA 2-1 in the semi-finals to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup final which they beat BRAZIL 3-0 to capture the World Cup for the first time.

Well in 98 the world cup was held in france...
in the round of 16 France beat Paruguay by 1:0
in the quarter finals they beat italy by 4:3
in semi finals they beat Croatia by 2:1
and then in the finals they beat brazil by 3:0... France won their first title (the 7th nation to win a World Cup), and the first host nation to win the tournament since Argentina did it in 1978.
Brazil's defeat to hosts France in the final is, as of 2006, their worst defeat in a World Cup - Brazil never lost another game in the competition by more than two goals.
I know this is not related to this question but it is interesting so i decided to write it - Three coaches were fired during the World Cup. Carlos Alberto Parreira (Saudi Arabia), Cha Bum-Kun (South Korea), and Henryk Kasperczak (Tunisia) were all fired after their teams lost their first two matches. In their final matches, all three teams managed a draw. So sad :-(
