SIM Free phones are quite simply a phone that it not locked to any service provider or network.
Phones that are bought with contract can sometimes still be SIM free meaning that you can use a different network's SIM card in the same phone.
The majority of Pay As You Go phones are locked to the network.
The majority of Orange and T-Mobile phones are locked to the network
Vodafone exclusive phone ares ordinarily locked
O2 direct phones are usually locked
The reason some people buy SIM Free phones is because the model they want is not available on Pay As You Go.
usually Pay As You Go prices are cheaper than the SIM Free option as there is a small subsidy from the network.
see: http://www.best-buy-mobile-phones.com/sim-free.html
For a full list of available SIM Free phones.
Hope this helps.

A sim free phone is a phone that isnt locked to any network, when you buy for example a PAYG (pay as you go) it will be locked to a network, ie you cant put any other simcard into it. You can actually get the handset unlocked, contract phones are often locked too. In laymans terms a Simfree phone is a phone open to any network in which you can use any simcard. Simfree phones are generally more expensive and you would need to get the settings yourself from the network provider like Wap, GPRS, even text msg settings and MMS settings, Also you if buy it simfree you may not get all the features of the network that you wanted it for. The settings are different for each network provider.
I would strong advise not to get one unless you know what you're doing. Also you will need to get a simcard for it as well if you dont already have one.

Sim Free phone is not sold by a network and therefore not locked into said network, normally purchased from an independent retailer with no contract involved (other than paying cash for it). It can then be used with sim card from any of the major network providers

In the US, mostly any phone that isn't from Cingular or T-mobile.
But if you want phone freedom, then a GSM phone with a SIM is exactly what you want.

Un telefono libre quiere decir que no este reportado ya que si lo esta no recibira la sim de ese operador.
Tocaria mandar a liberar el telefono cambiandole el imei.

It's a phone that will not work on any carrier that uses GSM Technology, such as T-Mobile, Cingular, Suncom. Depending on the carrier's technology it may work on Sprint or Verizon or Alltel
