This is most commonly used for paralell printing connections, although there are some scsi devices that it can be used for. But generally it is a printer.

Older printers and scanners have parallel (Centronics) connections. More up-to-date ones, now use USB, or, more precisely, USB 2.0

How old is that textbook you are using anyway? That is a parallel port that was commonly used for printers. The COM ports, or serial ports were RS-232's.

Both type ports should be extinct in the near future: USB has replaced them both.
