Just be honest and tell her... Do not hide this or try covering it up... If you do it will hurt her even worse and have worse results than if you are honest and tell her the truth... We all have accidents and are human.

DO NOT COME HOME!!!!!
Seriously, do not come home. Especially if it is HER dog.
Do NOT buy her another one, she WILL be able to tell that it is not HER dog.
Do NOT make a joke about running the dog over, she will make an even better one about you sleeping on the couch.
Do NOT be sarcastic, the couch will be your best friend if you are
Do NOT take this opportunity to tell her that it is JUST a dog.
Do NOT tell her that you will buy her another one.
Do NOT tell her that you did not like the dog (remember the couch?)
Seriously, you had better come home with some flowers (to put on the dogs grave), tissues and whatever else that comforts her. Now would be a GREAT time to go and visit the jewelry store (if that is her thing) or even better, go buy a pretty photo album and put the dog's pictures (assuming you have some) in it and give it to her, along with a letter of apology.
My husband lost my dog when he was four months old. He called everyone and asked them if they had taken my dog home (he was out at our property with a bunch of family and friends clearing trees) or if they knew where he was, otherwise, he would have to head for Mexico.

Last week some guy in our neighborhood ran over his 3 year old daughter.....he couldn't see her behind the truck. I know this is not the same, but tragedies happen all the time. We all pray for that family and have helped out as best as we can. The thing to remember is that our good memories are all we got now and that the person/animal(in your case) are in a much better place full of constant love. Gently break the news to your wife and comfort her as best as you can.

Hi. My suggestion would be to stay calm and rehearse what exactly you want to say. Get in touch with her, you stay calm, let her know you've got some bad news she needs to hear. Maybe you could say something like "There was an accident today that you need to know about. I am very sorry but *name of animal* has died" You'll probably get a response you won't like, but the truth is, you gotta tell her and it won't be pretty.
I had a situation similar to this but it was a favourite table, chess set and stereo that was accidentally broken. I got through it and so will you.

Honey, I ran over the dog.
Just tell her gently, but directly.
Sorry that you are going through that. It must be a hard thing for you to deal with too.

Wait a week and see if she notices. Or, go out and get a gold fish and when she comes home and says, "Wheres the dog" just point to the goldfish and say "we've never had a dog"
Than drag her upstairs and give her something good and hard to think about. Than ask her if she remembers the dog.

Don't tell her but just throw it into the street and then she will think someone else ran over it. Will make your life a lot easier for next several months.

Just tell her that you did it accidently and you are so sorry. Did the dog die? I hope not.
Pray that she will be understanding..

MOVE IT to the middle of the road.
Come home the same time as she does.
Drive in behind her.
Jump out of the car and WAIL "OMG!! WHO COULD HAVE DONE THIS!?"
