Something I have always really wanted to be able to play but never got round to it. If there is hope for me, can anyone suggest the best way to start out or things to avoid?

everyone's going to say this because its true... it's never too late to start learning.

i am completely self-taught and just within the space of 1 year i was able to get from totally hopeless, to reasonably competent.

the key is how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. i've had so many friends tell me they wish they could play the guitar and ask me for help learning, but they all give up in the beginning because they get frustrated that they can't play the songs they want to in the 1st few weeks.

even now, when i try to learn new songs it sometimes seems like i'm never gonna master them if they are complicated. but through perseverance, it can be very satisfying in the end!

No no no no no,it is NEVER too late to learn anything. If you want to learn guitar at 25 (which by the way is NOT old) or at 75 it is never ever too late. It is only ever too late when you regret not doing things.

Go for it and enjoy it.

Must say I am glad to see other thirty somethings saying they are only just learning, because I was thinking of doing it too. thanks!

Get your self a nice classical guitar, that's what i use I love the sound of them and they are easy to play.
Find some music that you like to practise with,
Learn your scales and basic cords and you should be playing within a few weeks if you stick at it.
Practise that is the only way you will learn i no it is boring at times but it is the only way to playing.
I play myself and love it.!!!!!
Best of luck and happy playing .Hippie.
