I have been wanting to upgrade the memory in my old Dell (256 MB) for quite some time but it is just too expensive. My comp. uses RDRAM PC800. Prices on the internet are ~$200 for 512 MB. Since I would have to remove 128 MB (all 4 slots used), that would give me an increase of 384 MB for $200. I have other computers but I like my old Dell, it has a kickass AGP videocard but when playing games the bottleneck is definitely the RAM.

This technology does not seem to be used anymore so I was hoping the price would come down. I have been watching the prices for years and don't see it budging.

Any thoughts?

It was expensive to make to begin with, and as you said they are no longer making it, or if they are in very small amounts. Hence it is becoming a hard to get item, which only makes it MORE expensive. The price will not be coming down, only going up.

Because it's not used any more and the lower density chips are more expensive to make, it may have bottomed out. Sometimes the newer, faster memory is actually cheaper. Not that that helps you any, since your old machine can't use the newer memory.
