how much water comes out when your water breaks? I am 8 months pregnant now and want to be prepared. Do you have contractions before or after the water breaks?

It could be either or. You could have contractions for a while and the docs still may have to break your water. Or your water could break and then contractions. All pregnancies are different.

Don't stress! Some women's water doesn't break at all and the nurses at the hospital have to do it for you, it happens a lot. Sometimes water will break before you have any contractions at all. Usually contractions will start first then later water breaks but you never know. All is different, which i'm sure you have heard a trillion times. I don't know how much fluid comes out because mine didn't break on it's own. If yours does break on it's own don't freak just change your clothes and head on to the hospital, make sure to take some towels with you for the car ride.

When I was 1 week before my due date of my 2nd child, my water broke. I would guess it was about a cup's worth (or less) but felt like alot more. I was doing nothing out of the ordinary and was definitely not having contractions . I didn't deliver for another 4 1/2 days ( with the onset of actual labor that 4rth day), but my midwife had me taking very high doses of Vitamin C as well as making sure I was well informed and educated throughout the pregnancy. I'm sure that is not the norm but I was comfortable with it and all worked out fine. During my first pregnancy the water did not break at all until the actual delivery. So the answer is it can occur either way. Good luck!!

Well all pregnancies are different. My water broke first and then I had my contractions. The amount of water was like a pee.. After that more water keeps coming out but in small quantities. Good luck with your baby. I really don't think you should be prepared. When the baby finally decides to come out, girl, you forget about everything!!! Is a very unique experience, enjoy to the fullest. Is a miracle happening before your very own eyes!

It could go either way. I had contractions with my first and the doctor had to break my water. The second child i had contractions then when they were checking me, my water broke. With my last child i had contractions and my water broke right in the dinning room! I heard a little POP sound, and looked down to see my pants were wet.

As for How much water? It is hard to say. Everyone is different, but for me i would compare it to dumping a "large" sized drink in your lap.

Don't worry about changing your clothes if this happens, believe me, more water will come out during the drive to the hospital. Just grab your bag and a big towel to sit on!!

Good luck!

Could be either. I was induced so i had mild contractions and when I got up to go the the bathroom I had just walked through the door and I felt a trickle down my leg... I had excess amniotic fluid with my pregnancy, so my doc had told me when my water broke to be prepared to get my shoes soaked. I was laughing about how my doc was wrong. Well, about an hour later I got up to go to the bathroom again and when I was getting back into bed look out!!! It was like someone had dumped a 5 gallon bucket of water in my lap.... I guess he was right....you know it is a lot of fluid when the nurses were laughing at me... thats when my contractions started coming hard.... about every hour or 2 the nurse would move the baby's head ( was blocking ) and more fluid would come out.. ( 18 hours of labor and c-section )....

good luck! I had waterproof crib pads on my bed and in my car and on my chair at work... I was so worried about my water breaking!!!

It's a funny story now!!!

If you're like my sister your water will break and you will be standing in a puddle. If you're like me the nurse will break your water (which goes onto an absorbant pad). From all the women I know who have gone either way, the ones who's water breaks first, they go fast into delivery. With my sisters 1st the baby was crowning 30 min later. If you need your water broken it will take longer. For me it was less than 3 hours, but for a friend of mine her 1st took 60 hours of hard labor before her baby came. Everyone is different, and it can also depend on the meds you chose. An epidural will slow the process. While petosin can speed it up. Congratulations! Rely on your instincts! (They are usually right!) Do not be afraid to ask questions. Good luck!

Labor can start either way...either by your water breaking first or by contractions starting. Your water breaking first only happens 20% of the time, so it's much more common to first experience contractions.
When your water breaks, it will be a large flow of fluid, and then will be a continuous trickle, as your body still continues to produce amniotic fluid.
Hope that helped and good luck!

Everyone is different. You usually get contractions before your water breaks. It's not tons of water and it doesn't always gush out at once. Could just be a continual drip. You will know when it happens though.

Only 15% of women actually have their water break on their own, so I wouldnt worry too much about that.
It can happen both ways...ctrx first then water breaking...or water breaking and then ctrx.
Some women only feel a drizzle (like peeing) when their water breaks, others feel a gush, and some only have it leak...it varies for everyone.
I had to have my water broken by the dr with both of my births. With my daughter they said my water bag was bulging so it was going to break at any time...so they broke it for me...there was a ton of fluid!
