I believe you refer to the Louvre in Paris.

Used to be a royal palace and government offices at some time then converted into the wealthiest museum on earth.

Miterrand made a new reception area with the modern crystal pyramid ( see the Da Vinci code movie) and then the museum proper has a staircase with the victory of Samotrace.

The main museum has a U shape and three main levels where there is display from ancient to XIX century art.. Most famous in the museum are the Venus of Milo ( Hellenistic period), The Mona Lisa ( Leonardo and countless of other renaissance master works). There are works of wonder of all the other periods, such as Dutch masters. The archaeological exhibits of Egypt , Mesopotamia, Rome and far east are among the best in the world.

Outside the main building there are two smaller buildings the Orangeri'e and the Jeu Du Paume. One houses regular exhibits , the other the best museum in the world of impressionist art.

On one side of the museum is the rue Strasbourg-St. Honore where the finest shops can be found, on the other side is the Seine river, where one can stroll and watch the other marvelous buildings of Historical Paris including the isle De France where Notre Dame is.

No - but I've been to the Louvre.

Fabulous museum with some real star exhibits (Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Venus de Milo).

Go and go soon - you'll love it.

Yes, a long time ago. Give yourself several days to go through the whole museum. It's a must see if you are in Paris. And it is spelled Louvre. :)
