Get a pair of nice pants (no Khakis or Dockers) in a neutral color (black, gray, maybe even brown) and a nice blouse. (I like the ones out now with the "tailored" look and wide cuffs) As for shoes, nice matching ankle boots or pumps would work good. You could also put a matching blazer on too with the blouse. You can find this type of outfit at Wal-Mart if you need to. When buying the clothes though, I would go with neutral so that when you get the job (think positive!) and buy more clothes, you have more options for matching to the pants or shirt.

Now, for the interview. The best advice I can give is be confident (even if your knees are shaking, don't let them see you sweat!), be respectful and be yourself. When you answer the questions, be decisive. Don't waffle on your answers. They aren't looking to give you a job, they are looking to find a good employee for their company. If you know anyone else that works there, ask them what type of questions they ask in the interviews and then think about your answers ahead of time. Not to say that you should decide on a definate, final answer ahead of time but you'll at least have an idea of what you're going to say. If you don't know anyone, google interview questions and that can give you some sites to check out for handling interviews. You also may want to "case" the store a couple of times before your interview. That way, you'll be familiar with everything they carry, the store's layout, that type of thing. If you have any questions for them, don't be afraid to write them down. Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions. Also, take another copy of your resume and references with you even if they already have a copy.

Unless you have certain obligations such as school or regular appointments, I would also let them know that you are willing to work any shift and any day. This could potentially limit your social life for awhile but employers (especially retail) are looking mainly for people who can work various times and days. After you're there for awhile and have an idea of how they schedule, then you can ask to have alternate weekends off or whatever you need. (Just don't over do it)

If you can fit it into your budget, you may want to also get your hair done/cut before the interview. (and make up too if you can) When you feel good about yourself, you naturally exude an air of confidence. Remember THINK POSITIVE! Good luck!

Well, you want to look professional, but stylish, especially since you're interviewing at Macy's (this goes triple if it happens to be the Herald Square store). Basic black slacks, fitted but NOT tight, and a matching jacket is perfect. Hair in a top knot or simple ponytail at the nape of your neck. You want to look sleek, out together. Little to no cleavage. You can mix it up with nice, silver accessories that are bold, but not overbearing. Places like Ross and Conway's (if you're in NYC) are great for interview wear on a budget. Don't wear too much perfume, since the interviewer could be allergic. Just a subtle hint of it. And simple, but clean, polished matching shoes.

As for getting the job, have a list of questions ready to ask your interviewer about the position, what to expect, growth potential, etc. Don't expect to talk salary on the first interview, but be prepared to do so, both as an hourly wage and as a yearly salary. Smile, be friendly but let the interviewer drive the conversation.

Do your research. Google Macy's and find out the basics about the company. Then check for recent press releases, so that you can casually bring up the new store opening, change in executive staff, whatever, that is happening at the company. If there are bad things happening, don't bring that up, or if you do, call them "challenges" not problems. It'll impress them that you cared enough to check into things.

WRITE THANK YOU NOTES, not emails!! In fact, it's best to have a few with you at the interview. Get the business card or full name of everyone you interview with, and write each one a separate card. Just a simple “Thank you so much for your time today. I am very excited about the prospect of learning more about this position and about how I could best serve the team as a (whatever the position is) for Macy's. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, (your name). Vary them slightly, if there was something specific you clicked about with your interviewer, mention it. Mail them the SAME DAY as the interview, so they get there quickly, while you are fresh in their minds.

Be rested, confident and ready to go. Don't have coffee breath or gas from too much soda. lol. And be yourself. Good luck!! :)
