There is no way to know exactly when a HD will fail. Sometimes they fail very soon, other times it takes years, or never (becasue something else quits first). The best way to protect yourself is to back up all your important files (pictures, documents, etc) on a regular basis. Back them up to CD or other device and keep the backup in a different location (protect from house fire). Another way to protect your data is to buy an external hard drive and use a program like "Backup my PC". If the HD crashes and data is not recoverable you can restore your computer from your external HD.

There is no telling. A brand new hard drive can crap out on ya in a day or week, or years....or it may never!! I would suggest though, getting a second hard drive to store your info on and keep the original hard drive for your OS. Or vice, versa. Good luck!
