Oh, honey.
I hope you're one of the best-off midwesterners out there if you're lookin to move to San Jose, or you have one HECK of a sweet job lined up before you get there.
It really is expensive. Not as bad as San Fran, but you will be shocked. Rent isn't the only consideration...gas prices throughout the Bay Area have consistently remained over 3.00 a gallon since well before Katrina. There is public transportation, but that adds up too after a while. You can try living out of the city and commuting in, but what you save in rent, you lose in sanity; traffic around there is horrific. It's a large metropolitan magnet for people of all walks of life (and everyone seems to learn to drive differently depending on where they come from), so there is some pretty bad driving there.

Well I have lived in San Jose all my life and I'll tell you, you can't buy a home for anything under $550k and that would be in the bad part of San Jose with alot of repairs needed. Everything here is expensive though the salary kind of makes up for the expenses. An average person probably makes between $12-$15
depending on experience. I am an office manager in Santa Clara and make $22. Of course I don't own a house yet just because I haven't really saved up money. San Jose is such a great area to live in. Weather is beautiful

The Bay Area is one of the highest cost of living areas in the nation. I live in Oakland, work in SF, and even in Oakland a decent 2 bedroom apt starts at $1000. And we're talking decent...not nice.
When you're looking for places, look for good neighborhoods first, and the place to live second. If you pick the wrong neighborhood out here, you're going to be surrounded by criminals and pedophiles.
If you currently live in the Midwest and enjoy it, I'd strongly reccommend staying there. I moved here from Oregon for work, and can't wait to move back.
