Depends on who is saying that to me and what his/her motive may be, and what reasons were given.
If it is my boss, and my competitiveness is causing a problem for the team - yes, I will certainly do that. If it is co-workers, I following my own rule - one person telling me may only be jealous or even vindictive; two persons telling me the same thing I need to start thinking about it; three persons, then I'll probably make the change. We don't live in a vacuum, and especially in a work environment we will eventually need help from others. There is no reason to isolate myself by trying to be a hot dog. Sometimes, it is not your competitiveness that puts people off, it is the way you go about it that rubs people the wrong way, and that can, and should be changed.
What's that saying? "Win the battle but lose the war"? Think of the big picture (and the future) - sometimes taking a step back will actually land you 2 steps forward. No harm in that!

Healthy competition is always good for you, it pushes you forward, makes you learn new things, encourages you to try harder so I would not unless the competition is affecting my mental or physical health. You should know when to quit, and when being competitive starts turning you into a freak, a bad person or an irritable troll you should stop.

No,my spirit needs to compete. But I do think taking things easy and learning how to surrender occaisionly can help a person find balance and more effectiveness. There are times letting someone else win can be a smarter more mature strategy.
