I am looking to go to China in the not too distant future, hoping to teach English. I have some Chinese friends who are giving me some ideas on things to read. (I would like to get a "feel" for the culture before going.) Anyway, I would like to have some suggestions for books or short stories to read. Classical and/or modern. The only real requirement is that they be available in English, and in the US from either a bookseller or through interlibrary loan--but I can search that part out myself, I guess. If anyone has suggestions--titles/authors and if you know it is in English, I will proceed from there. Thanks.

I spent three years in China, and loved teaching English. You will no doubt have an amazing experience! Here are a few books you may want to try:
_Wild Swans_ by Jung Chang. (http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Swans-Three-Daughters-China/dp/0743246985/sr=1-1/qid=1168623127/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-3803358-1658414?ie=UTF8&s=books)
_Riding the Iron Rooster: By Train Through China_ by Paul Theroux. (http://www.amazon.com/Riding-Iron-Rooster-Train-Through/dp/0618658971/sr=1-17/qid=1168624090/ref=sr_1_17/002-3803358-1658414?ie=UTF8&s=books)
_Becoming Madame Mao_ by Anchee Min. (http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Madame-Mao-Anchee-Min/dp/0618127003/sr=1-1/qid=1168624193/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-3803358-1658414?ie=UTF8&s=books)
_Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress_ by Dai Sijie. (http://www.amazon.com/Balzac-Little-Chinese-Seamstress-Novel/dp/0385722206/sr=1-1/qid=1168624293/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-3803358-1658414?ie=UTF8&s=books)
Ok. This last one has a wacky title, but it is a great non-fiction book that captures the spirit of living in China. It is titled _Foreign Babes in Beijing_ by Rachel DeWoskin. (http://www.amazon.com/Foreign-Babes-Beijing-Behind-Scenes/dp/0393328597/sr=1-1/qid=1168624378/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-3803358-1658414?ie=UTF8&s=books)
Enjoy!

I love the Amy Tan books and Pearl Buck but an ancient Chinese Classic would be the Tale of Ginji. Your students would probably be familiar with it in the same manner as students here are familiar with Cinderella etc.
I would recommend reading everything your Chinese friends recommend though since they might be more familiar with the current culture.

Read Pearl S. Buck. She wrote the good earth and several other books. She grew up in China, her parents were missionaries there, and continued to write about the culture all her life. She provides not only very insightful comments on the culture, but also provides great observations on how Caucasians were received. Also, read W. Somerset Maugham's The Painted Veil.

Amy Tan! Although they are fiction they are based on real chinease culture. They are wonderful. I found her most recent book "Saving fish from drowning" very discriptive of modern china. BOL!

The Art Of War by Sun Tzu is a well known classic. I have read it myself and it is as much a work of philosophy as it is one of military strategy.

It's probable to invest plenty of time and money looking for methods to show your kids how to read and boost their examining skills. Is hard to teach a tiny kid how to read, and also engaging them to read is challenging in itself. Nonetheless it does not need to be this way since you got the help of this system https://tr.im/AJXls , Children Learning Reading program.
With Children Learning Reading you can show your son or daughter how to split up appears and separate phrases into phonemes, an important issue as soon as your kid is simply learning to spell.
The reading program from Children Learning Reading program allows you for kids to see rapidly and properly, from simple words to phrases till they understand to read stories.

Best thing I could recommend is Monkey, also called Journey to the West. That has it all.
