It either means that scheduled service is due or there is a problem. You would have to look at the manual to see exactly what it means and the method to reset it.

My Honda displays a service symbol and since I do not get service at a Honda dealer I have to reset it myself by pressing a button while turning on the ignition.

Hi there the light your refering to is the engine management warning light, the vectra is fitted with a system called simtec which has back up systems in place, the light should come on when you first go to start the car then go out when the engine is running, if the light stays on then you have as someone else rightly stated a fault code logged in the memory of the vehicles ecu. The car will still run but is in what as known as " limp home mode" which means exactly that, its a back up system designed to get you home or to the nearest garage for a diagnostic check. Vauxhall dealers use the Tec system but any garage which has an advanced code reader/ scanner will be able to read the code and tell you what it means. However on this vehicle and many like it it is only a rough guide to what is wrong ( unlike the Mercedes DAS system which is a lot more accurate) once you have the code it is esssentail you get someone who knows how to correctly diagnose the problem (unlike a lot of so called mechanics that simply swop components hoping this will fix it) each sensor or component has power in, signal out and earth as well which all need to be checked to ensure that the component indicated is faulty and that there isnt a problem elesewhere, for example if it is saying one component is faulty then is it that componenet or another one in the circuit which is supplying either a signal or power to that component ?

Best advice i would give is bite the bullet and get the Vauxhall tec scan done it shouldnt cost much the last one i had done was £25 and point me in the direction i needed to go, then either let the dealer sort it or try one of the more reputable mobile mechanics in the yellow pages

It means the engine management system is reporting a fault. The dashboard not working properly could be related (especially on a newer car) but I doubt that's the actual cause of the problem. You could try disconnecting the battery for an hour then reconnecting and seeing if this solves it.

Sounds like the check engine light. Could be any of a couple of hundred things. Take it to a shop and they can read the computer codes.

No, dash lights wouldn't make the check engine light come on.

possibly your transmission light. Which would makse sense since the speed and RPM's arent lit. Generally its a sign that the computer isnt working right.

Generally the CHECK ENGINE light actually says that on it. The transmission light, however, does not.

Have a diagnostic run.

This irks me, i want to know what light it is. What car are you driving and what year is it? The only car's ive seen the check engine lights that dont actually say those words are the older audi's.

if you have a auto place to take it to they can hook up to the chip in the car and tell you or re-program it off. My car was doing that to, not the same model but it happened to come on because the gas cap was not tight on it and created the check engine light which is what that sounds like. Hard to tell with out seeing it.

It is the engine light--sometimes that means something serious, but it can also light up if you're low on oil.

Ring or take it to yr nearest Vauxhall dealer, the lights on for a reason.

Its telling you to take your car to a Vauxhall dealer ASAP, leave it there and get a more reliable car. If you don't want to buy a Japanese car you'll be scuppered.
