That is the toughest part about becoming an appraiser. You will have to beat the bushes,so to speak. Go to the state website and it will provide you with all the certified residential and general appraisers by area. You may have to submit it in writing. Our state has it all on line. Then set up meetings with the appraisers to see if they are needing an apprentice. Pay is crappy for a while and they might want you to sign a non-compete clause so they aren't grooming you to be their next competitor. I ended up staying with my mentor because the deal was so good and it is an easy company to work for. Every company is different. Try to find one with good standards and a good reputation. There are so many slugs in our business that will do anything for money. Take the high road. Good luck. If you need anything else, I will try to help(although I'm in Ohio). lumberman57@yahoo.com

I am a commercial appraiser in NY. It took me over 2 years to find a mentor. It is extremely difficult to find a good mentor. My best advice is to join the the appraisal institute. They have the best education as well as great networking opportunities. Their website is www.appraisalinstitute.org. Check under resources and positions available. Good luck in your search.
