I am 8 weeks pregnant with my first baby (planned) and recently I gained weight due to a medical problem. My doctor says she wants me to gain only 20 lbs since I am borderline overweight right now. I already feel so uncomfortable being at my current weight and now I have to gain 20 lbs more! I am young, healthy and hoping to lose my extra 20 lbs by the time I go back to work after the birth, which is 3 months. I want to lose the weight because I know my self esteem will be crushed if I keep the extra 20 lbs on top of my current weight.

Do you think its possible to lose 20 lbs from pregnancy in 3 months? How long did it take you to lose your baby weight?

Wow you haven't even had the baby yet and are already concerned about losing the weight. Please enjoy this time, and your body. Anyhow I gained 41 pounds with my first pregnancy. You will lose most of the weight right after the baby is born. It's funny you go with a big belly, then the baby comes out it goes down, then it is a little swollen and takes awhile to go down. I say with my first child I lost the extra weight within a month. I ate the same and didn't exercise or anything. Just walks. It is much easier with your first child to lose the weight. With my son I gained about 45 pounds. It took afew months to get down. Mind you my body is much different now. Your hips widen after having a child and that you can't change even with exercise. I weigh about 10 pounds more now than I did before I had kids. But I am pretty much happy with my weight. Yes it is possible to lose 20 lbs from pregnancy within the first few months, especially being your first. Keep active and breastfeeding helps. Like I said after birth you lose most of it then, once the water, afterbirth and of course the baby come out. Expect to be swollen as your body has just went through alot of trauma and it takes time to heal. Don't worry, concentrate on taking care of you and your baby. Enjoy this time. You will probably never look more beautiful than you do when you're pregnant. Congrats!!

Yeah it's a good chance that you will lose 20 lbs in 3 months but to be completely honest with you, you may gain more than 20 pounds while your pregnant. I gained 43 pounds while i was pregnant with my first baby and it took my about six months to lose all the weight plus an extra 10, didn't plan on losing so much it just happened because i ate real healthy and exercised plus my baby kept me going non-stop! If you're committed to losing the weight than you will, don't stress it could make you gain more weight, i did over Christmas because i was so stressed out.

It always depends on the person, of course. It also depends on how you handle it, if you are disciplined enough to stick to a diet, if you are breast feeding etc. There really isn't a "sure" way to tell you. Just remember that the health of the baby is more important than your self esteem for the first few months after birth. What I mean by that is, that you shouldn't decide against breast feeding just because that would mean for you to have to eat right.
Your self esteem shouldn't suffer because of your weight right after giving birth anyway...everyone around you will know that it is because of the baby.
From my own experience it went as follows:
First baby at age 21 - gained 20 pounds total and lost all of it within the first 6 weeks after birth - no diet.
Second baby at age 27 - gained 40 pounds and lost it over a period of 8 months by watching what I ate.
Third baby at age 38 - gained 45 pounds and still have 10 pounds to loose. My baby just turned 1 last week.

The "extra" 20 lbs would be mostly water gain, placenta and baby. You would probably lose 15 once you give birth.

If baby is 7 lbs for example, once baby comes out, you have already lost 7 lbs...understand? That goes for amniotic fluid weight and placenta weight too..all gone once you have the baby.

This all depends on how much you gain of course. Many pregnany women go on feeding frenzies and gain a ton of weight. Just eat right and exercise.

With my first I gained ALOT of weight (way over 20 lbs) and it took 2 years to get rid of it... BUT with my second I gained 25 lbs and by my 6 week check I was 2 lbs less than when I first became pregnant. It can be done.. you just have to watch what you eat.

Good luck!!

I gained 28 pounds with my first one and I was back to my pre-baby weight by six weeks. My second, I gained 13 pounds and she weighted 10, so I literally lost all the weight with birth. Everyone is different. Take your time and enjoy the baby, the weight will come of if you walk and keep active and eat right.

I lost almost all of my pregnacy weight weight within the first week becuase most of it was water. If you stick to a healthy diet while pregnant you will not gain that much fat. Most of the weight will be the baby, the afterbirth and water retention, so it should be relatively easy to lose the rest of the pregnacy weight fast.

realistically it took 6-8 months to lose the weight. i didn't starve myself i just took time and took walks with my baby to help lose the weight. i didn't have a gym routine. so i suggest you not worry about the 20lbs. i had to lose 38 pounds and now i'm pregnant again and i've already gained 15 pounds and i have 15 weeks to go. don't stress out about the weight.
