There is general unrest in the world caused by inequality; there is poverty, disease, and conflict of religion, culture and race; then there are issues of more personal nature, issues regarding children, jobs, income, and prices, changing values, general health. Scientists say that the Earth is warming up, and global climate change will be cataclysmic for human race; some even wonder if the mankind would survive another hundred years. I know this is a bleak picture, and reality of the things is not this relentless, not yet at least. What do you think? Share your views. Why are you still hopeful about the world?

i have great hope in mankind...even though it seems everything is doom and gloom there are bright spots of humanity across the world doing good and doing it without the media flashing it across the screen. those acts of goodness are what changes the world and they don't need nor want accolades from the world...they just persistently and doggedly do for others and the earth regardless of what others think. its too bad we only see all the bad in the media as there is so much good being done that we NEED to see. the world and its people are not as bad as they are portrayed, it just sells more newspapers and increases ratings...for some reason people are attracted to seeing doom and gloom rather than nice and good...me i seek out good, its better for me and others.

I'm not oblivious to any of that, I've acknowledged it all, read about it all, but if stop being optimistic or hopeless, then would you rather just accept a hopeless future and have people to roll around in their filth until it all comes crashing down? what's the harm in trying to carry out altrusitic goals in an optimistic way? I was the biggest cynical and pessimistic person a few months ago, but I've learned that it's better to look at things with a different perspective and trying instead of just criticizing and complaining and hating
you forgot to mention the mass extinction of animals, people forget animals contribute a lot to the ecosystems that we live in, they directly affect us, more animals are becoming extinct today than in any other time period, a few decades from now, we might not have the animals that we learned about when we were kids, there are only 700 mountain gorillas left in the world, we just lost a chinese dolphin only one is left
the first step is to acknowledge the problems and learn about it but if everyone just acknowledged the problems and gave up on the hope, then nothing would ever get solved, i hate it when i hear people say that as long as they won't be alive when the effects of global warming really devestate people they could care less, that's so unreasonably selfish, if you just want to point out the problems and be hopeless, don't impose your view on others who might want to make that difference

The optimism-pessimism balance is a very important tool for human kind. We need pessimists to whine about all that is bad in the world and reveal all the worst of things to us, because the fact is, life's a *****. Unfortunately, due to their rather negative disposition the pessimists don't believe these problems can be solved, so once they've revealed them they can do little but grumble about them or go in search of new problems. At this point the optimists become alerted by the whining of the pessimists that terrible things are going on. Being optimistic they believe there are solutions to these problems and so set about finding them. But without the pessimists, they would still be living with their heads up their arses believing everything is peachy. So you see, its a balance.

Optimism is not a prediction that things are going to get better. Serious problems and tragedies will always be with us.
Optimism is an attitude to strike: that these problems do not have to overwhelm us, that our actions make a difference, that many people care (even if most do not), that great things come from small beginnings (think about Mother Theresa).
Optimism is a good attitude, because it keeps us alive to possibilities for what can be done, not focused on ills that, when we allow them to, will overwhelm us.

Yes i'm hopeful. There are certain cogent reasons for it:
1) Diversity is the beauty of life.
2) The human wish to fight against above mentioned problems itself is a positive indicator towards betterment.
3) Your sense to realize 'black picture' is itself optimistic
Future is unseen. Let future give its chance (with your hope) to bring something best for mankind.

I can remember reading something that the Dalai Lama said when asked how he can be optimistic when his people were being persecuted and he was living in exile. His response: It feels better.
It's always a choice. Where there is life there is hope. Without it, we might as well curl up in a ball and wait to die.

I've given up being optimistic for the human race..we're all gonna die!!
i can only hope that i learn...........
to shut my fingers in something is painful and dangerous.
to put my hands in steaming water is very bad for my skin.
jumping off high walls is a practise for those with young ankles.
singing in public is bad for every ones ears.
people don't want me to be blunt about how they look.
being a bouncing tigger when out in public is not a good thing to attract men.
