Having read the answers that have already been given, it seems that the general opinion points towards an inner ear problem. A simple way to test if this is the problem is to stand up straight with your feet together, hands down by your sides and close your eyes. If you have a balance problem you will sway and start to topple. A good place to try this is in the shower - the shower cubicle walls might be able to save you from falling completely down! If you manage to remain upright and don't feel that you are going off balance at all, then it may not be your inner ear that is at fault.

A couple of years ago, I fell over 3 times around New Year's time, all within 10 days. Still bear the scars.
If you've ruled out the ear issue, the answer is to make a conscious effort to take things slower. Stop galloping around all the time, be a lot more careful in the dark or wet weather and on steps. People kidded me that they were senior moments but I think it was just being over committed and mind on too many things at the same time. Christmas time particularly. Hasn't happened since so think that was the case.
Although,
I did mention it to a girl who turned out to be a white witch and she insisted I carry around a charm made out of haemetite which she said was very grounding and good for concentration. Could have been that!

Could be to do with your ears, do you have an infection or anything? Also have you stopped eating or not eaten in a while? Because you could be feeling faint! It could just be coincidence! How do you feel before you fall over could be a key aswell. If not and it carries on, try calling you doctor.

There are many possibilities.
My friend had the same experience. She was practicing Ty Bo(sp) and it started causing a problem with her balance. It's not an infection and should go away on it's own but I suggest that you see an ENT.

You could have a slight infection of the inner ear which causes this problem. It upsets your balance mechanism. If it happens again see a doctor. At worst it could be a petit mal which is a mild epileptic fit.

It could very well be your ears. You could also be diabetic, or have high blood pressure. There are loads of reasons, and the only way you can stop it is to go to your doctor, tell him, and have a full medical.
