Personally, I know all the bad things that Ive done growing up and I know now that if Ididnt do half the crap I did, my life would be so different right now. I would have a better career and place to live and would have saved a lot more money. I want my children to do the opposite of what I have done

Thats the result of true love and affection.
The nature of mind is that - when we REALLY LOVE someone, their progress gives happiness to us. And we do not want them to face the problems what we faced - its a selfless state.
There is one more dimension to this your point, that generally good children looks after parents after growing and it is only when they are placed high, they can provide more comforts to parents also (if the child is good enough) and so some parents wants their children to grow high with this slight expectation also.

well who would want worse for their kid than they had. our situation always seem the worse while we were growing up. i didn't know we were poor until i was 27 and my mom had to tell me that. so it's probably not as bad as we make it seem and then we try to out do our horrible childhood and want to offer something better to our kids who will turn around and do the same thing when you thought you had already given them the best. there will always be something they won't like about the way they were raised.

Have you ever heard anyone say...I don't want that for my child because it's too good for them? It's part of life and learning from our mistakes. Maybe I was never told " get good grades, go to college." I know how that has affected my life, doors that never got opened because of it. So...I'm gonna make sure my kids Know how important it is. It really is a control issue, we have to have control of something. Right?

because looking back we can see how things could be better-
Its a method of trying to avoid history repeating itself
Its our duty as parents to see that we learn from each generation what worked and what didnt
Also sometimes a selfish thing for us to live through our children those things we didnt get to have but wanted so much

It's an instinct of nurturing. Isn't the all over goal of a parent to make their child better off then they were.

Because you know what it's like to be have your personality forcefully shaped by the hands of those who have the power to do it. Yet, you still do it to your own kids without realising it, leaving the points your parents have altered like they are, yet still bending other aspects. You always do, because you're human.

All I want for my son is for him to find happiness and contentment and to live a life free of pain. If he finds it by being a bum on the street then so be it. If he finds it by running a country, so be it, just as long as he finds it within himself.
Karma.

Any parent's #1 Job is to provide. Most parents always compare themselves to their parents and try to surpass or at least meet parents' level of providing.

Because we are delusional and we think that our children are the only way to make it right.
