As one of those "rich people from the South" I will have to say yes. Those parties do exist, but are not limited to Presentation Balls. Most wedding receptions, charity fundraisers, and galas for museum openings, new development projects, etc. are black tie. There are also "white tie" events which are the most formal of social gatherings, but are quite rare. Entertaining elegantly is much less common now than it was during the first half of the 1900's. More commonly now you see casual dinner parties with $600 bottles of wine on the table, or a tailgate party before a college football game with gourmet food and two plasma flatscreens for 20 people. The money is still there, but the trend is leaning towards casual entertaining.

You bet. Fund raisers for the performing arts throw great galas.
They aren't just for the rich and famous, either. Ladies, these are great places to meet single men who aren't just in to their cars and Monster Truck races.

Also, cruise ships, white tie wedding receptions and New Year's Eve parties.

I'm sure they do happen in real life, but the closest I've gotten to one is watching a James Bond movie.

I agree with Chrissy- high society...It's stuff I read about all the time in books, esp. romance books. It's every womans fantasy to be wealthy someday, even tho we know it's only a dream...I've always wanted to attend a ball...maybe someday...

High society.... Those types of things are really just for the rich. I'm sure if all your friends were millionaires, you'd know all about fancy stuff like that.

It would depend on what section of the country you are from..
If they play a lot of slow , soft music where you are at, you will have ball room dancing.
If it is rock etc, forget it.

Country Western also has some nice slow dances.

Yes, there are.
They are typically fundraisers with high-dollar tickets.
