In one episode, there was a riot and some inmates wanted to attack the girl docter. Michael led her to safety through the crawl space overhead. He told her he knew this path coz he was asked to do some PI work for the guards.

I think "PI" is the name of the working crew. Supposedly Fish, Fernando, Abruzzi, T-Bag, Lincoln and the african american guy (don't remember his name), and the guy who had the cat (forgot his name too) are on the crew to clean up in the prison. They do yard work, janitorial, and such. Once Michael mentions to Tweener that they get paid 19 cents an hour. Abruzzi, who is the one in charge of PI, gives a PI card out to his employees. I'm not too sure what the PI stands for though.
