His Majesty's Bark Endeavour set sail from Plymouth, England on 26 August 1768. Her crew was to observe the planetary movement of the passage of ' Venus and to search the southern seas for 'Terra Australis Incognita' - the unknown southern land (turned out to be Australia.)
On board, under the command of Lieutenant James Cook, was a crew of 72 men, 12 marines and 11 civilians. The civilians were a scientific team drawn together by Joseph Banks. It included Daniel Solander (scientific advisor) and Sydney Parkinson (artist).
It was these three people in particular who introduced the world to Australia's amazing flora and fauna.

captain james cook. if you visit beautiful whitby in north yorkshire, you can go out to sea on a smaller replica of the endeavour. there is often another ship in dock, similar to the endeavour but bigger in scale, which has featured in hornblower and harry potter.
