Look at the laptop lights (e.g. caps lock). If WIFI is on, the wifi light will be on.

Hardware tab
Click the Device Manager button (or Hardware Manager in early versions of Windows)
Look for the Network Adaptor catagory in the hardware listing
Click the + sign in front to open the listing details
Your Wireless card will be listed there

Go to control Panel click on system, click on hardware, click on device manager, scroll down the list to network click on the plus sign, there it is.
