Is it more cost effective to build your own home as opposed to buying an existing home? I know it'll depend on the cost of land, but I want to get the most for my money.

Building and renovating are the most stressful endeavors one can't even imagine. Many divorces created by that. Either will wind up more expensive than buying existing housing. Existing also has side benefits of already having window treatments and established landscaping. Finding level land with utilities (septics & wells pricey & a pain) and then finding a reliable builder / contractor. Major work. Always costs more, takes longer than you think. Very few happy on either side at completion.

It depends on your area. l found it more cost effective to buy an existing home. I bought an older home, got more square footage and larger rooms. I need to replace the countertops, but I saved enough on the purchase to do that easily.

I have always gone with new homes. they don't cost much more and everything is new. Many people I know purchased used homes and shortly need new furnace, water heater, or roof, or anything that is old and worn out.

YOU MAY FIND SOMEONE WHO NEEDS YOU TO " TAKE IT OFF THEIR HANDS", ... AFTER THEY'VE LIVED THERE FOR 20 YEARS. YES, IT WILL BE JUNKED OUT & HAVE LOTS OF REPAIRS, BUT IF YOU DO THE MATH, A LOT OF TIME YOU CAN BUY IN THE LOW 30"S SQ/FT, PUT IN $ 10.00 SQ/FT ( $ 15,000.00 ON A 1500 SQ FT HOUSE ) & YOU'LL HAVE A HOME IN NEW CONDITION FOR $ 40.00 SQ/FT ...... YOU CAN'T HARDLY BUILD FOR THAT!
