It really IS a case of saying to yourself "When these have gone I'll buy no more!" and then carry the threat out - FOR EVER!

I started smoking for a very stupid reason. when i was in college some guy was smoking next to me. Stupid me thought i would try one and that would be that. Boy was i wrong. i came home for Christmas and my dad warned me that i would get addicted. I just did not listen. I have smoked on and off for the past 9 years. My doc gave me a new drug called chantix. you keep smoking while you take the first pack of of the drug (i think its 10 days) and than you stop smoking, but keep taking the pills until you are ready to stop. My advice for those who smoke or are thinking about it. DONT even have one cig.. once you do you are hooked and for those who already do smoke. STOP. i know its easier said than done, but you will feel better, you will smell better and most of all..you will live lot longer.

just stop i have, after a day or two i stop thinking i needed one, and everyday i think ive gone this far might as well carry on, the last cig i had was new years eve, when i got out i just take some polo's or some gum, so when ever i felt like i just ate a polo mint took my mind of it. its still hard but its getting easier, by biggest downfall still is when i go out and have a drink seeing other people smoke, thats the hardest time, its all in the will power,
but i surppose you know there are all sorts of stop smoking products out there, and also if you go to your doctors they will but you on a programm sort of thing, my mate done it, and you have one to one meeting with someone. she found that very helpful.

since ive stopped i feel so much better, and i dont smell of smoke my clothes dont smell. im saving money, and now i can smell a smoker a mile off and they stink, just the thought that i used to smell like that puts me right off having one..

good luck.

Just quit cold turkey style.

This means, to wake-up and NOT smoke at all throughout the day and night and the next day and night and so on and so on until you are free of nicotine in your system.

This takes alot of self-control, eating healthy, exercise and keeping yourself busy and free of stressful situations for at least 12-14 days.

After that you will be well on your way to being clean again.

Please make sure you have the apropriate support of friends and family who will encourage you and keep you motivated.
Also stay away from people, places and things that will tempt you and you will be successful.

I gave up smoking 5 years ago after smoking for 20yrs. It wasn't easy but i went cold turkey and every time i felt the urge for a cigarette i sucked on a chuppa chub lolly, i soon got bored of them but had lost my craving for cigarettes. When you do give up and you smell the smoke on other people you will realise just how bad you and your clothes smelt. Also watch yourself light up and smoke in the mirrior, you'll see how stupid it looks. Good luck!

Not to start again, not even when "just one cigarette, only this once, wont hurt". It does not work as you will all of a sudden find plenty of excuses to have another one. And another one. Trust me, I know what I am talking about: stress for exams, a party, fight with yur partner, etc.

I have tried these nicotine patches, and they do take the edge off. I was less cranky ( so I was told), and have less cravings. The gum is basty!

I was told that accupuncture works as well, but never tried it.

A different concept, think about the folks with COPD
we have to walk around carrying an oxygen tank with a tube in our nose. Folks staring at you, hang around 1 day per week waiting for 02 delivery, Spend several $100 at the drug store. Lots of drug "side effects"

Give it up before you get that far

Just stop! Two days of cold turkey and the worst bit is over!

Within ONE DAY your food will taste different (nicer, with flavour) and the nicotine will almost be out of your system - then it is just a case of stopping the hands from reaching for a ciggie - the boredom bit is what makes you want a ciggie! Find something to do with your hands...make a model or something!

i gave it up by making up rules for myself...didnt smoke outside, then at work, then during the day, then only at weekends then only with a drink then not at all...it took a wee while but i found that i didnt even like the taste or smell of smoke eventually, when u get used to not having the taste, when u do, its horrible..

good luck x

Go sign up at a local pharmacy - Tesco is one. The NHS are offering a subsidised service where by the pharmacist will advise you of the best way to give up (either patches, gum, nasal spray or lozenges) and will moniter you for 6 weeks to give support - all for £6.50 per week. xxx
