in most accents it will be two: how - ling, but it could be with three if the second created syllable is stressed: how - il - ing.
It should generally be pronounced with three as the 'owl' aspect is two syllables when alone - but can be with two as in commanparlance it is said with such - heck it's tiring typing - i'm just gonna yell (1 syllable!)

Dos! Butcha know what? Sometimes words like this can be stretched a bit to sound like it has 3 syllables, but that's taking poetic license (so have your registration ready in case you're pulled over by the syllabic patrol). ;P

I pronounce it with three - how-well-ling. But then again, maybe I'm weird. I also pronounce caramel with three. My boyfriend swears its "car-mel", but I say "car-a-mel".
