There's conflicting answers on this one.

At first I was told not to dye my hair 8 years ago with my first pregnancy. Now I've been told it's okay. The biggest issue at hand is the fumes. If they bother you, don't do it. You are more sensitive to smells throughout pregnancy and the fumes from the dye can make you feel sick. Heck they can make some people sick even if they aren't pregnant.

The color may not turn out as expected though - so that's a risk you have to decide on taking or not. I've dyed my hair during pregnancy and it turned out fine - platinum blonde. But if you're going darker I think that's where the most problems come in with the color taking correctly.

Is it safe to dye my hair while pregnant?
There are conflicting reports about the safety of hair dye during pregnancy: Several studies found no ill effects on pregnant rodents given 100 times the typical human dose of these products, whereas British researchers reported chromosome damage among women who dyed their hair. Although this study was not conducted on pregnant women, this finding suggests that there may be some risk to coloring your hair while pregnant.

As a precaution, some physicians advise you to avoid hair color until after your first trimester (the period when your baby's vital organs, head, body and limbs form). Colorants made from vegetable dyes such as henna are preferable to the chemical dyes used in permanent and semi-permanent formulas. Recent studies indicate that hair dyes contain relatively high levels of bio-available lead acetate that can be harmful to the fetus, particularly the nervous system and brain. Check the product label and avoid lead based hair products.

I never did while I was pregnant. Not with regular dyes anyhow. I would not risk the effects it may have. Those fumes are so strong. I am prone to grey and felt very uncomfortable though so I made my hubby go get me a vegetable dye from the health food store, they have many different shades to choose from.

Studies have never shown to actually do any harm to the growing baby but because of the hormones the dye may not hold very well and it may just be a waste of money.

You can't to do all over color, because the dye is on your scalp and and is absorbed by your body. Not only that but the color will probably be funky because of your hormones. A weave, partial weave, or streaks can be done though because it's only on the hair, and the person doing your hair has control on the color.

Yes, you can. Just make sure that you do it in an open area because you don't want to inhale those fumes... that is the most dangerous part to it. Also make sure you wear gloves when applying the dye.

I asked my doctor when I was pregnant. She said just make sure you are in a well ventilated area. You don't want to inhale the fumes.
