Ignore the unfortunate person who answered your question first, Britain is a classless society now and he's upset that he's monetarily no better off than working class people. Class now only exists in peoples minds in today's modern Britain. All the idiots who need to feel better about themselves by looking down on others have hopefully moved to America already, if they haven't, they will.

'Thieving Chavs' = The soldier's and fighters that made Britain great. Seems now they don't have a respectful place in our country as we 'Americanize'. Shall we build them trailors? Perhaps a camera crew following them around as we watch in awe.

They are on a remote Island as well....It's called Britain!
....................................................................................................
The Romans left Britain of their own accord. They were simply unable to stay. They'd already been forced out of all the other countries they'd 'colonised'. Britain was the only place they left without being forced.

Roman technology advanced us in certain areas that's for sure. But I think you should find out about a place in Britain called 'Skara Brae'. It turns out the British already had their own advanced technology predating both Roman Italy, Ancient Greece and even China. Skara Brae.

We are very lucky to be British, and I for one have first hand experience of the alternatives. Chavs and snobs are equal!

There's always a tendency for nostalgia for the past - the impulse to ask the "what if" questions ...

The Arthurian legend cycle has planted the idea firmly in our collective sub-conciousnesses that Roman Briton was a venerable Garden of Earthly Delights -- however I'm not so sure Boudica and her people would have seen it quite the same way!

As for Jutes, Angles, Saxons & Danes - they do have a reputation for brutality and brutishness, but they had a lot going for them, too. I believe there are complaints in the Anglo-Saxon chronicles about how the Northmen ("vikings" we call them today) were vain: they washed too much and this was attracting Anglo women! And the Saxon Witan was a much better system of government than the Norman feudalism that replaced it.

I guess my nostalgia runs to England would be a better place if William had never come -- or if Harold had been strong enough to resist him (and not get shot in the eye)!

Given that the Roman Empire crumbled I can't see that it would have made any difference whether they left or not we would be in pretty much the same position. Society might have been nicer if they had never come. We did get lots of benefits such as roads, but then ancient Britons had perfected the chariot which could be ridden across rough terrain so actually we didn't need roads, they did. We also didn't have a need for Hadrians Wall prior to their arival. Ancient Britons apparently had quite an advanced society in which all members were considered equal - would have been nice to see how we turned out without all the other influences.
