My water heater has a funny smell. It has a burnt plastic smell. Anyone know what it is? It is working fine.

No, I am not sniffing water heaters, you can smell it in the bathroom . (where the heater is)

You didn't say if the heater is gas or electric but either way it sounds like something got up against a hot pipe. I would look it over carefully to make sure there is no fire hazard. The themostats could be going bad and allowing it to get hotter than normal. If it smells hot there is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly.

Try wiping the heater when it is cold.Use all-purpose cleaner then turn it on and smell it.

do you run your home with propane? that sounds like a propane smell
